Oak Ender

Echoing chainsaws from morning into night across the city.
Live Oaks retain their leaves in the winter allowing ice to accumulate when freezing rain occurs. The branches become heavy and sag until cracking and fall onto waiting power lines. Sometimes the branches, if they’re at a particular angle will peel off exposing raw green of fresh wood while holding the limb against the tree.
No power, phone, data for 4 days 3 nights. We cooked a frozen lasagna in the fireplace and slept deep in the frozen quiet darkness.
When the firewood ran out, I boiled a large pot of water and held it with my gloved hands. The dog curled under blankets listening blankly to far off sounds. My large collection of battery powered lights all find use.
The day after, neat piles of chopped branches line the streets waiting for the compost truck. Broken limbs hanging tenuously from damaged trees waiting to fall.
Sunny and 72 degrees
