SXSW 2012
This year was exceptional. Much like last year I spent most of my time at Spiderhouse/29th st. Ballroom, et al. Six stages this year. Somewhat confusing but none-the-less entertaining. I did not go downtown once. Never go downtown during this. Here is a list of any band I watched more than 75% of their set, ordered chronologically by which I saw them perform over the duration of Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Bad Weather California Prince Rama Quilt Amen Dunes Mikal Cronin Psychic Ills Allah-Las Heaven Crocodiles Gardens The Mallard Guantanamo Baywatch Strange Boys Moon Men On The Moon M@n Horse Plus Donkey The Zoltars Pataphysics Barracudas Peter Case and Paul Collins Most of these bands were excellent. The stand-outs were Allah-La's: excellent garage throwbacks from L.A. The Mallard: post-punk psych trio from S.F. Strange Boys: they have a new interesting piano-heavy style. Peter Case and Paul Collins: two guys from The Nerves and The Breakaways reunited to play their hits. This was by far the best show all weekend. People were going crazy like at a GBV show, singing along and crowd surfing. A rare sight indeed.
